The suspects were immediately arrested as they came back to shore.

Two suspects are in custody following an attempted burglary at a home near the Hood Canal Bridge Dec. 10 where they fled the scene, crashed their car and unsuccessfully tried to escape law enforcement via a stolen rowboat that ended up capsizing, forcing the suspects to head back to shore where they were arrested.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the home where the resident said a man and a woman had allegedly broken into a storage container, stealing more than $11,000 worth of gold and jewelry. The suspects were seen fleeing in an SUV with covered license plates, JCSO says.

Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office also responded, and while en route a deputy encountered the suspect vehicle, which had been involved in a rollover collision near Port Gamble. The SUV landed on its roof and the suspect fled the scene.

JCSO deployed a drone to track the suspects, who had stolen a small rowboat and attempted to escape in Port Gamble Bay using a piece of plywood as an oar. The boat capsized and the suspects were forced to swim to shore where they were both arrested, per JCSO.
