Easter at stadium

Cross Sound Church will have Easter service followed by an egg hunt and games April 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bainbridge High School Football Stadium, 9330 High School Road.

Called “Easter Together, Celebrate with Us,” participants are asked to arrive early, wear masks and social distance as COVID-19 sanitation protocols are in place.

People are asked to register at crosssound.churchcenter.com so the church knows how many people to expect. Any questions? Email crosssound.org.

Wyatt Way

Workers on the Wyatt Way Reconstruction Project completed a majority of the curb and sidewalks around the Madison/Wyatt intersection the past few weeks.

The accessible ramps and remaining sidewalk will be completed soon. In the next few week the crew is anticipating completing the asphalt paving. The remaining elements will be road striping, landscaping and cleanup.

The contractor will likely be starting replacement of drainage facilities further east along Wyatt near the end of April. That work, which is part of the city’s annual drainage program, will alleviate flooding of the public right-of-way and private property in the vicinity.

The work will include removal of a large willow tree; its roots have contributed to failures of the drainage system. The tree has been approved for removal by the city’s arborist.

The detour route remains in place.

Exclusion deck

Two virtual events will commemorate the 79th anniversary of the first forced removal of Japanese Americans in World War II

The Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community and the BI Japanese American Exclusion Memorial Association invites everyone to a pair of online events March 30 to commemorate the first forced removal and exclusion of 120,000 Japanese Americans. At 11 a.m., a live stream of the 79th anniversary commemoration ceremony and Exclusion Departure Deck dedication will begin at www.facebook.com/BIJAEM

Dozens of living survivors who were there on March 30, 1942 will be in attendance to be honored and to participate in a ribbon cutting ceremony for the just-constructed Exclusion Departure Deck built on the location of the historic former Eagledale Ferry Dock, the site of the first forced removal and exclusion of Japanese Americans. Due to the pandemic, advanced age of all of our survivors and concerns about potential health risks, we are requesting that people please stay home and share in the ceremony online.

At 6 p.m., there will be a free, online Humanities Washington presentation “Let It Not Happen Again – Lessons from the Japanese American Exclusion” presented by BIJAC president Clarence Moriwaki. Pre-registration is required at https://bit.ly/317OFnw

BI site to close

Since COVID-19 rates have dropped, along with the demand for testing, Bainbridge Island will close its test site at City Hall March 31.

The city will be able to offer testing as-needed at other locations should an outbreak occur, and city support is necessary.

The closure will allow emergency management staff and volunteers to focus on supporting vaccine distribution. The COVID test site at City Hall has collected 2,146 tests, and there were 16 positive cases.

Local in Navy

Lt. Trevor Torres, a native of Bainbridge Island, is playing a critical role in the U.S. Navy’s efforts to maintain a healthy and ready fighting force in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a supply officer serving with Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Conn., Torres is one of the 139 service members assigned to Task Force Southeast – Jacksonville, the primary Department of Defense support organization for the Federal Emergency Management Agency response to the coronavirus.
