Cleveland jumped to an early lead and beat Bainbridge 7-6 in an upset win Monday in girls varsity fastpitch softball.

It was the first time in memory that the Spartans stumbled against the Eagles.

Cleveland broke a 6-6 tie in the bottom of the seventh for the win using a walk, an error and a single to give the home team the win after Bainbridge rallied from a 5-0 deficit to take a 6-5 lead in the fifth inning.

Cleveland pressured Bainbridge early using the short game and their speed to take a 4-0 lead in the first.

A bunt single, a stolen base, a hit batter and a double steal and a two run single gave the Eagles a quick lead. Another bunt single brought home the third run, with a stolen base followed by another single scored the fourth run.

Cleveland pushed its advantage to five with a solo home run by Molly House in the third.

But Bainbridge rallied in the sixth to take the lead.

Caroline Michaels cracked a double to lead off the inning. Hayden Jobes reached on a third strike wild pitch, with Michaels advancing to third. Samara Hutchinson brought home the first Spartan run on a ground out to second, with Jobes reaching third.

Ruby Raymundo then doubled home Jobes, then scored when Abby Sullivan reached on error.

Malia Peato brought Sullivan home with a triple to the fence.

The Spartans weren’t finished just yet. Grace Colburn tied the score on an infield single, then took second on a throwing error. A third Cleveland error, on an Anna Kozlovsky ground ball to second, brought Colburn home to put Bainbridge ahead by a run, 6-5.

That lead was short-lived as Cleveland got a run back courtesy of a pair of Spartan throwing errors in the bottom of the inning.

The Spartans went down quietly in the sixth and seventh innings, setting the stage for the Eagles’ walk-off win.

Peato went 2-for-4 for BHS, with a triple and an RBI. Ruby Raymundo went 1-for-4, with a double and an RBI.

The Spartans’ record fell to 4-3 with the loss (4-2 Metro League).

BHS will next take the field against Nathan Hale at home, at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 10.
