It’s First Friday!

The festivities start earl this month, as Maxim Loskutoff, author of the critically-praised short story collection “Come West and See,” visits Eagle Harbor Book Company at 12:30 p.m. Friday, June 1, the latest guest in the shop’s Brown Bag Lunch series, to discuss writing and reading with Bainbridge Island Review culture reporter Luciano Marano.

The event is free and open to the public, with the shop providing snacks and soft drinks. Guests are invited to bring their own lunch.

Visit the “events” section of www.eagleharborbooks.com to sign up to attend.

“Come West and See” is a work both timely and timeless. Set in the Redoubt, an isolated triangle of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming where an armed occupation of a wildlife refuge escalates into a separatist uprising, these stories explore the loneliness, insecurity and frustration inherent to love and heartbreak: A lakeside wedding drunkenly devolves into a cruel charade; an unemployed carpenter joins a militia after his wife leaves him; and a former soldier raises the daughter of a dead comrade in a bunker beneath an abandoned farm.

Then, the monthly art walk begins again, from 6 to 8 p.m., and boasts a bevy of beautiful venues.

For a complete list, visit www.bainbridgedowntown.org.

Along with the Art Walk, the month’s first Friday means a return of the Space Craft Vinyl Lounge.

Held again from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Alehouse on Winslow. This month’s musical theme: “Unplugged / Strippin’ it down to the bones.”

Bring your own vinyl to spin, or just come to listen. The night promises to deliver a smile — if not a few moves on the dance floor.

Admission is free.

Visit www.spacecraftpresents.org to learn more.

Also kicking off Friday is the latest from the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra.

The Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra will present Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 4,” as lead by music director finalist Bobby Collins, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 1 and 3 p.m. Sunday, June 3 at Bainbridge Performing Arts.

The program will also include “Violin Concerto No. 1” by Dmitri Shostakovich.

Tickets, $21 for adults, $18 for seniors, students, military and teachers (children younger than 18 get in free with a paying adult) can be purchased at www.bainbridgeperformingarts.org.

After that, prepare to get fresh.

The 30th annual Bainbridge in Bloom, the annual tour of five private gardens that showcase the creativity and diversity of the island’s landscape, presented by Arts & Humanities Bainbridge, will again take place Saturday, June 2 and Sunday, June 3.

Each garden will feature live music, as well.

Exact locations of the featured gardens remains secret until the weekend of the tour, but hints and highlights of the gardens and music lineup will be shared as the date approaches can be found at www.ahbainbridge.org/bainbridgeinbloom.

Since its launch three decades ago, Bainbridge in Bloom has showcased about 150 gardens throughout the island, and attracted an estimated 50,000 visitors, according to Arts & Humanities Bainbridge.

Each day’s tour runs from 9 a.m. to 5.p.m. and begins at the Bloom Hub located in the Filipino American Hall (7566 NE High School Road). Ticket holders will receive a map to each of the gardens or shuttle locations, a wristband admitting entry to each garden, and helpful local information.

Tickets are $35 each. Advance tickets are available at Bainbridge Gardens, Bay Hay & Feed, and Sotheby’s.

On the days of the tour, tickets can be purchased on site at the Bloom Hub.

Cyclists and members of the military buying tickets at the Hub get a discounted price of $25.

For those driving, there will be shuttles to some gardens and others will have on-site parking. For those who want to “Bike the Bloom,” cycling route maps will be provided, and there will be bike racks near the gardens.

Also on Saturday:

Kids Discovery Museum will host KiDiMu Play Day — its the annual anniversary celebration (formerly Birthday Bash) — for play ambassadors of all ages this Saturday.

Play Day is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 2. All are welcome to join the festivities and enjoy free admission and special programs at the nonprofit children’s museum.

The fun will begin with a free walk through Winslow led by marching band musicians.

All are invited to kick off the festivities with the “Kids for KiDiMu” family fun walk for kids and kids at heart.

Island Fitness instructor Tamera Roza will lead a warm-up on the plaza at 10 a.m. Then participants, led by musicians from the Bainbridge High School Band, will head out to celebrate the power of play with KiDiMu, the whole town and tourists, as they stroll through Winslow and then return to KiDiMu after a short loop.

Walkers are encouraged to register in advance at kidimu.org or at the museum to receive free commemorative T-shirts (while supply lasts; first-registered, first-served).

The walk is free for all participants and there is no registration fee, thanks to the museum’s supporters.

After the walk, families will have a chance to connect, make friends and make memories as they engage in exhibit play at KiDiMu.

In addition, they will enjoy free-of-charge programs at KiDiMu.

Bainbridge Island will host a grand opening for the city’s new Waterfront Park dock on Saturday, June 2.

Though the dock has been in use by the public for some time now, city officials wanted to plan the celebration for when the weather would be more cooperative.

The grand opening is now scheduled for 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 2 at the dock. There will be live music, free ice cream, and pirate fun for the kids.

On Sunday, Mel Brooks’ iconic comedy classic “The Producers” (1967) will be back on the big screen at Bainbridge Cinemas at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 3.

The once-great Max Bialystock (Zero Mostel) had once been the toast of Broadway, but now he has been reduced to a washed-up, aging, fraudulent, corruptible and greedy Broadway producer who barely ekes out a hand-to-mouth existence romancing wealthy elderly women in exchange for money for his next play. Then, his accountant (Gene Wilder) discovers a discrepancy in Bialystock’s books and has a revelation: a savvy producer could make a lot more money with a flop than a hit.

Thus begins the duo’s quest to stage the worst play of all time: “Springtime for Hitler: A Gay Romp with Adolf and Eva at Berchtesgaden,” “a love letter to Hitler” written in total sincerity by deranged ex-Nazi Franz Liebkind (Kenneth Mars).

The film was Brooks’s directorial debut, and he won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. It was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry, and placed eleventh on the American Film Institute’s “100 Years…100 Laughs” list.

Visit www.farawayentertainment.com/show/the-producers-50th-anniversary-1968 to learn more.

Also, the third annual Living History Walk will again take visitors on trip to exciting heritage sites Sunday, June 3.

Running from 1 to 3:30 p.m., the tour will include beautiful historic homes, and educate visitors as to exactly how “the Little Fort at Bean Point” helped defend the nation through two world wars.

The tour begins in the upper lot at Fort Ward Park (2241 Pleasant Beach Drive NE).

Admission is $10 per person, free for those 8 and younger. Visit www.islandwood.org to purchase tickets (advance purchase required).

Finally, also on Sunday, the Men’s Compline Choir of Bainbridge Island will sing the Office of Compline at 8 p.m. at Saint Cecilia Parish.

Compline, also called Night Prayer, is the last of the traditional daily services sung by monastic communities and dates back to at least the 8th century. The service consists of chant, readings, psalms, prayers, petitions and hymns, sung in a contemplative setting in a darkened church.

The program is approximately 30 minutes long.

All are welcome.
