Scrappy Spartans snag double win in debut wrestling match

SEATTLE – The Bainbridge High varsity wrestling team claimed wins against both of its debut opponents last week, beating Ballard and Bishop Blanchet in the Spartans first match of the year Thursday, Dec. 1.
First, the Spartans faced off against Ballard and won 36-19. Double forfeits negated the 120-, 145-, 152- and 220-pound slots. Each team also claimed one win by forfeit.
In the 106-pound match, Bainbridge’s Cameron Williams pinned Blake Coe in just 45 seconds to begin the night.
Next, Ballard’s Isaiah Larkin won an 8-4 decision victory over BHS’ Rachel Longridge in the 113-pound match.
The 126-pound Spartan Sterling Watnem pinned Riley McGinnis in 1:48.
Ballard’s Ruben Contreras won a major decision against Clayton Marsh 15-4 in the 132-round match, but Bainbridge came roaring back in the 138-pound faceoff as Oleg Maguire pinned Keaton Thatcher in 43 seconds.
In the 160-pound match, Bainbridge’s Nate Michaels pinned Roc Ransdell in 2:32.
Bainbridge’s Hague Bush, 182-pounds, pinned Alec Sigmar in 2:24, and island heavyweight Beto Allen, 285-pounds, was then pinned by Nigel Hawkins in 1:19 in the final match.
BHS handily beat Bishop Blanchet next, finishing the night up 39-18 over the Braves.
There were double forfeits in the 132-, 145-, 170- and 220-pound slots. BHS claimed forfeit wins in the 106-, 113-, 182- and 285-pound matches.
Blanchet’s Beau Wiebe claimed a win in the 120-pound match, pinning Watnem in 3:30.
Marsh earned an 8-4 decision victory in the 138-pound match against Blanchet’s Eric Hodneland.
In the 152-pound match, Bainbridge’s Nate Michaels pinned Cole Lunde in 5:43, and in the 195-pound contest, Spartan Mac Schelbert pinned Brian Hooks in 4:51.
The Spartans next traveled to face Lakeside on Tuesday, Dec. 6.
The Bainbridge squad is not set to grapple at home until Tuesday, Jan. 3, when they host Kingston and Ingraham High.
