First Friday Art: What happens behind BARN’s doors

BARN has been talked about with much to do. But as the old aphorism goes: A picture – or tapestry or wood carving – is worth a thousand words.
For the first time ever, the artisan network will share its work with the public. The show, titled “BARN at BAC: Making Community” will run Nov. 4 through Nov. 27 at Bainbridge Arts & Crafts.
The 42 exhibiting artists represent six BARN studios, including jewelry, book, fiber, glass, metal, printmaking and woodworking arts. Participating artists are Lynn Agnew, Bill Baran-Mickle, Carol Baker, Diane Bonciolini, Helena Bierly, Jan Branham, Ehren Renee Jameson printBrav, Caroline Cooley Browne, Gillian Bull, Robin Callahan, Marsha Cutting, Virginia H. Davison, Jason Devinney, Kathy Dickerson, Donna Lee Dowdney, John Ellis, Margaret Gibbs, Michael Gunderson, Meg Hartwell, Robin Hruska, Renee Jameson, Sarah Jones, Carol Fiedler Kawaguchi, Maryann Kirkby, Carol Latham, Sandra Leese, Kathryn Lesh, Mary Jeanne Linford, Jody Lyle, Marcy Lynn, Martha Makosky, Jane Martin, Shelley Minor, Jacki Moseley, Linda Sohlberg, Deb Sweet, Ruth Timmons, Janetmarie Valiga, Melinda West, Bridgett Wonder and Irene Yesley.
“The title of the show, ‘Making Community,’ has a dual reference,” said BAC executive director Lindsay Masters.
“It speaks to two visual arts organizations coming together to celebrate the creation and the exhibition of fine, local art and craft,” she explained. “It also highlights BARN as a maker space. Since its formation, BARN has built a tremendous community of artists and craftspeople, working in many mediums, who operate and thrive in an environment of sharing and collaboration. We at BAC are honored to be in a position to showcase the work of these artists by giving them a platform for displaying and selling their work in a professional gallery setting.”
David Sessions and Marie Weichman will lead a jurors’ walkthrough of the exhibition at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, also at BAC. They will dissect specific works of art and craft while offering an insiders’ look at the jury process.
