The Island Gallery will welcome renowned clarinetist and composer William O. Smith for a special performance with Bainbridge Island’s Anne Pell Jazz Trio at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7.
Smith works extensively in modern classical music and jazz, perhaps best known for playing with legendary jazz pianist Dave Brubeck, in both his octet and quartet, from the 1940s until Brubeck’s death several years ago.
As even Brubeck himself said, Smith is, “one of the all-time greats.”
The performance is presented in conjunction with the opening of The Island Gallery’s October exhibition “Bologna Blues Series,” works by Virginia Paquette, and also celebrates Smith’s 90th birthday.
Paquette has worked and exhibited internationally. Her art responds to motion and memory and is inspired by natural forms and phenomena. Winner of numerous public art commissions, Paquette has collaborated with her husband on site performance installations here in the Pacific Northwest as well as around the world, including “Deluge,” created for the Queen Victoria Museum in Launceston, Australia and “Saffeides” at Teatro Greco in Italy.
