Suquamish naturalist Leigh Calvez will visit Eagle Harbor Book Company at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15 to discuss her new book, “The Hidden Lives of Owls: The Science and Spirit of Nature’s Most Elusive Birds.”

Calvez’s book takes readers on adventures into the world of owls: owl-watching, avian science and the deep forest, often in the dead of night. These birds are mysterious, and that’s part of what makes them so fascinating. Calvez makes the science entertaining and accessible while exploring the questions about the human-animal connection, owl obsession, habitat, owl calls, social behavior and mythology.

Calvez previously studied humpback whales in Massachusetts and on the Hawaiian island of Maui.

She is the author of “Whale Watching Adventures on the Pacific Coast.” Her nature writing has appeared in “American Nature Writing: 2003,” Ecologist, Ocean Realm, the Christian Science Monitor, the Seattle Times, Seattle PI and Bainbridge Island magazine.
