Reduce emissions, vote yes on I-732 | LETTER TO THE EDITOR

To the editor:

Finally, we have a chance to take a big step forward in addressing climate change.

In the November election you will be able to vote to reduce carbon emissions in Washington state and create a model for the rest of the country.

Initiative 732 will tax pollution and return the money to us by lowering other taxes, primarily our very regressive state sales tax. This is a free market-based solution that has proven effective in British Columbia by lowering their carbon emissions 10 to 15 percent in eight years.

The floods in Louisiana and the fires in California show us what more and more of the earth will be experience from global warming. The planet will be a very inhospitable place in a few decades if we don’t cut our carbon emissions quickly. Let’s not make our children and grandchildren pay the ultimate price because of poor decisions that we are making now. We need to act now to create a cleaner future for ourselves and for generations to come.

For the climate and our children, vote yes on I-732.
