In memory of Prince, today’s Throwback Thursday at the Bainbridge Review goes back to the turn of the century. So today – let’s reminisce like it’s 1999.
Let’s look at the April 17, 1999 edition.

School’s out Monday — teachers walk
Teachers will leave their jobs Monday, closing Bainbridge Island public schools for a day.
Bainbridge Island teachers voted Tuesday evening to stage a one-day walk-out Monday and rally in Olympia to emphasize how serious they are about a 15 percent cost-of-living raise.
“The only reason we’re here is that there has never been a cost-of-living for teachers,” said David Layton, president of Bainbridge Island Education Association, the district teachers’ union.
Superintendent Stephen Rowley and the school board sympathize with the teachers’ salary demands but do not support the walkout, Rowley said in a letter sent Wednesday to all parents.

Ferry suit off, for now
A lawsuit filed against the state Department of Transportation by Bainbridge Island and other Kitsap County residents who live on Rich Passage in King County Superior Court has been withdrawn.
“We had a court date for (April 16). We had filed a motion for dismissal,” said ferry spokeswoman Pat Patterson Thursday.
The ferry system claims the Rich Passage homeowners filed suit in the wrong county by filing in King County instead of Kitsap.
“I understand the plaintiffs agreed to withdraw their suit,” Patterson said. “We expect to see them next week in Kitsap County Superior Court.”
Property owners allege that the fast ferry Chinook has contributed to increasing shoreline and habitat destruction since it was placed in service last May.
