Spartans come up short against Crusaders

SEATTLE – The Bainbridge High varsity baseball team suffered its second straight loss Monday, March 28 after relocating the game against Eastside Catholic,originally scheduled as the year’s first home game, to Seattle.
The final score was 5-3, and came on the heels of the team’s dispiriting 10-0 loss to Garfield.
Monday’s loss to the Crusaders left the BHS squad with an overall season record of 1-2, and set to play the home opener against rivals from O’Dea Tuesday, March 29 instead.
Against the Crusaders, no runs were scored in the first inning. Eastside managed a slight run in the top of the fourth, putting up four, which Bainbridge was unable to answer before the bottom of the fifth.
Then the Spartans put up three, and the Crusaders managed to sneak one more in at the top of the sixth.
No runs were made in the seventh.
Nate Boegl led the island team with one hit, one walk and two RBIs.
Jack Niehaus managed one run and two hits in his four at bats.
David Wellbrock, the Spartans’ primary pitcher, held the mound for five innings. He allowed five hits, three earned runs and three walks. He also managed three strikeouts.
