BAINBRIDGE – The Rough Riders were unable to ride the storm out as the Spartans reined in Roosevelt with an 11-0 win during BHS’ home opener in varsity coed tennis.
The Spartans won five out of the six singles matches before a rain squall came in and halted the action, according to Spartan Coach Jennifer Shorr.
After a 35-minute delay, the sun came out to shine again, but so did the Spartans, who picked back up with the last singles match at the No. 1 girls singles position and Bainbridge’s Samantha Jiang finished that off quickly and clinched the win, 6-1, 6-1.
Bainbridge’s No. 1 boys team was leading in another match when Roosevelt threw in the white towel and defaulted the remaining doubles and mixed matches and the Riders rode off to the ferry.
A good crowd came out to support the team, Shorr said, including one of last year’s team leaders, Ben Devries.
In the singles matchups, Spartan Eli Wagner beat Ben Sahlin 6-2, 6-1 in boys No. 1 singles, and Mason Ogden of Bainbridge polished off Jonathan Kent 6-0, 6-1 in boys No. 2 singles.
Ellie Van Slyke won in girls No. 2 singles for Bainbridge after beating Avery Connell 6-1, 6-1.
Teammate Lily Welsh topped Lana Maybruck 6-2, 6-1 in girls No. 3 singles.
