BHS Wins State Debate Title!
The best high school debaters in the state live on Bainbridge Island.
That was established officially Saturday when a four-person Bainbridge High School debate team won the two-day tournament at Washington State College, Pullman.
The champions: Sally Logg, daughter of Elmer Logg, Battle Point; Sheila Selfors, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred W. Selfors, Wing Point; Janice Stranne, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stranne, Seabold, and Fred Simpson, son of Mr. and Mr.s John Simpson, Eagledale.
Their coach, who instigated inter-school debate at Bainbridge High School only last year, is Mr.s Jessie Schroeder, Wing Point.
The Spartans, champions at a district meet in Bremerton, swept through the state tournament with six straight victories, defeating larger schools and schools with more experienced debaters. In the finals, the Islanders topped Kent-Meridian High School.
Color
Student Paper ‘In the Red’
Color … we want color in our newspaper, said the students at Bainbridge High School in a recent survey.
So the staff of the Spartan Hi-Lites gave ‘em color in last month’s issue, published Friday.
On the front page was the word “YOU” in red which read into a sub-head which said, in black, “ASKED FOR IT.” The accompanying news article explained that it costs an extra $50 to have a second color used in the printed Hi-Lites.
It was done without costing $50. The printer left a blank space and the Hi-Lites’ staff, using red crayons, hand-lettered every one of the 415 copies before distributing them.
The paper is edited by Carolyn Woodward, assisted by Sandy Plumb. Business manager is George Broom. Other editors; Pat Petrie, news; Marcia Cave, copy; Connie Herron, feature and Dave Jones, sports.
