A Bainbridge Island man was arrested for impaired driving earlier this week while he was behind the wheel of the same car he crashed during a DUI accident in December, according to police.
The man, 30, was arrested just after 10:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24 on Highway 305 just south of George Lane.
A deputy from the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office pulled the driver over after he passed the officer’s parked patrol car while heading west on Highway 305, and the officer saw the man’s 2008 Honda Accord had a headlight that wasn’t working.
The deputy later learned the headlight had been broken in a collision that involved the man and the Honda in mid December.
After the traffic stop, the officer noticed the driver had glassy and bloodshot eyes, smelled of alcohol, and his speech was also slurred.
When asked where he was going, the driver told police he was heading to Safeway.
The driver also had a swollen area above his left eye, and he said his wife had punched him about a half hour earlier at their home on Bainbridge.
A Bainbridge officer went to the man’s house to speak with his wife, who was surprised that her car was gone and said she had gone to bed and left her husband “passed out drunk” on the couch. Police determined there was no probable cause to make an arrest for assault.
The driver admitted to drinking wine earlier that day, starting at 10 a.m., but said he had stopped drinking at 2 p.m.
He failed roadside sobriety tests and was arrested for DUI. Two breath tests revealed results of .236 and .234.
The driver was then taken and booked into Kitsap County Jail.
