BAINBRIDGE – The Bainbridge High varsity wrestling team came up short in its first home match of the season Thursday, Dec. 10, a doubleheader against Chief Sealth and Garfield grapplers.
The Spartans first faced off against Sealth, losing 54-22, before making a go against Garfield, who defeated them 42-34.
Despite the overall losses, there were several individual Spartans who had standout matches — including some who won both bouts.
Against Sealth’s Nathan Perrite in the 132-pound bracket, Cade Topham won in an 11-3 decision.
Also in the night’s first match, BHS team co-captain Hague Bush pinned Sealth’s Johnny Banchero in 3:02 to claim a win in the 170-pound bracket.
Against Garfield, the solo female Spartan wrestler Rachel Longridge claimed a 9-1 decision win over Logan McCallister in the 106-pound division.
Topham again came out on top in the night’s second match, claiming a win by default over Cole Davis in the 132-pound bracket.
Bainbridge’s Clay Wren secured the 152-pound spot, pinning Garfield’s Abdikarim Mohamed in 1:57.
BHS co-captain Aaron Jumpa followed that win up with one of his own, pinning Garfield’s Mikhail Kamila in just 15 seconds to claim for Bainbridge the 160-pound bracket.
Bush also repeated his early victory, pinning Garfield’s Rogan Zangari in one minute flat in the 170-pound match.
Bainbridge also claimed three forfeit wins throughout both matches, and double forfeits negated only two matches total.
The Spartans are not slated to wrestle at home again until the annual Island Invitational Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 9.
