Swimmers, divers head to state meet

BAINBRIDGE – Fifteen members of the Bainbridge High girls swimming and diving team will head to Federal Way this week to compete in the 3A State Girls Swim and Dive Championships.
The super Spartans are Ana Bucy, Melinda Carr, Amanda Comeau, Olivia Dow, Ani Duni, Carina Laukaitis, Jackie Hellmers, Hannah Lee, Erin Miller, Allison Murphy, Candice Rosen, Cammy Rouser, Shea Schardein, Hannah Tonsmann and Lauren Witty.
Bainbridge will compete in every event.
The Spartans will challenge for the state title in the 200-yard medley, coming in as the No. 2 seed with a time of 1:50.8, second only to Lakeside (Seattle), at 1:49.06. The relay team of Murphy, Dow, Rosen and Duni will race for the crown.
Three Bainbridge swimmers — Tonsmann, Rosen and Laukaitis — will race in the 200-yard freestyle.
In the 200-yard individual medley, BHS is sending four swimmers to state: Murphy, Dow, Witty and Miller.
Duni will also compete in the 50-yard freestyle, and enters the state meet in the No. 3 spot.
BHS is sending two divers: Rouser and Hellmers. Rouser enters the competition with the fourth-best point total in 3A diving.
Rosen, Miller and Schardein, a freshman making her first trip to the state meet, will race in the 100-yard butterfly.
Witty will represent Bainbridge in the 100-yard freestyle.
Laukaitis will also swim in the 500-yard freestyle, along with teammate Tonsmann.
The Bainbridge relay team of Comeau, Dow, Laukaitis and Duni will be the No. 3 seed in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
In the 100-yard backstroke, Bainbridge is sending three swimmers: Murphy, Schardein and Bucy.
Three other Spartans will race in the next event, the 100-yard breaststroke. Duni, Dow and Carr will represent Bainbridge.
In the final preliminary race Friday, the Bainbridge relay team of Tonnsman, Witty, Murphy and Rosen will compete in the 400-yard freestyle.
The state 3A meet starts with preliminary races at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13 at the King County Aquatics Center.
Finals are set for Saturday, Nov. 14 and also get underway at 2 p.m.
