Bainbridge ballot measures on track for validation

Enough ballots from Bainbridge Island voters appear to be in hand at the county elections office to validate the Feb. 10 Special Election.

According to the Kitsap County Elections Division, a total of 5,842 ballots had been returned for processing through Thursday, Feb. 5.

Two proposals on the Feb. 10 ballot — Proposition 2, a $16 million bond measure that would pay for new and improved fire stations on Bainbridge, and Proposition 1, a $5.9 million bond measure to pay for the purchase of the 23-acre Sakai property for a future park — require a supermajority vote of 60 percent.

Those measures also have a turnout requirement of 40 percent of registered voters, however. That means that voters representing 40 percent of the turnout of the 2014 General Election must cast ballots by Tuesday for the two bond measures to be validated and move forward if approved by voters.

A total of 4,734 ballots must be counted. The number of ballots from Bainbridge through Thursday exceeded that number by 1,108 ballots.

At least 2,841 “yes” votes are needed for the passage of the Bainbridge Island Fire Department’s Prop. 2 and the Bainbridge Island Metropolitan Park & Recreation District’s Prop. 1.

The Bainbridge Island Fire Department’s Proposition 1, a 9-cent levy increase to pay for more firefighters and EMT, needs a simple majority vote on Feb. 10 to pass.
