SEATTLE – The Bainbridge varsity wrestling team ended last week’s doubleheader on the road against O’Dea and Cleveland with an even record.

One win, one loss.

First, against host O’Dea on Dec. 11, the Spartans came up short and were bested 42-30 overall.

The match got off to a slow start for BHS.

First, there was a double forfeit in the 106-pound class, then the Spartans were forced to forfeit the 113-pound division.

Bainbridge’s first wrestler, Jordan Jackson, then proceeded to kick things in gear a bit for the island squad. She claimed a forfeit victory in the 120-pound class.

O’Dea rebounded well and scored three pins in the 126-, 132- and 138-pound classes.

Hague Bush scored the first non-forfeit win for BHS when he pinned O’Dea’s Ellis Tran in 2:57 for a victory in the 145-pound class.

Last year’s state tournament placer Jack Miller also brought one home for the Spartans in the 152-pound match, pinning his opponent Marcutio Hammaker in 3:16.

Aaron Jumpa won in a 3-2 decision over O’Dea’s Tristan Mohn in the 160-pound match.

Liam Topham pinned O’Dea’s Jack Goldberg in 1:27 for a BHS win in the 170-pound class.

Spartan co-captain and team heavyweight Joaquin Gurza claimed a decisive 4-1 decision win over Logan Flones to claim the 182-pound match.

O’Dea won forfeit wins in the 195-, 220- and 285-pound classes to secure the victory.

Bainbridge fared significantly better in round two against Cleveland High, where they ultimately claimed a 56-18 win.

Double forfeits nullified the 106- and 113-pound matches right away.

Cade Topham pinned his 120-pound opponent in 3:30 to get Bainbridge off on the right foot.

Jackson again claimed a forfeit victory, this time in the 126-pound match.

Bainbridge’s Bo Baird pinned Cleveland’s Sam Ly in 4:55 for a 132-pound win.

Greg Williams also pinned his opponent, Kmonie Newton, in the 138-pound class.

Bush scored BHS a forfeit victory in the 145-pound class.

Miller, Jumpa and Liam Topham consecutively each pinned their opponents in the 152-, 160- and 170-pound matches, respectively.

Miller bested Thomas Le in 1:09, while Jumpa battled Evard Gondo and prevailed in 5:39. Topham made quick work of Cleveland’s Keanu Mumbar and won in 22 seconds.

Gurza won by forfeit in the 182-pound class.

Cleveland then claimed three wins by forfeit in the heavyweight classes.

The Spartans spent the weekend at two consecutive tournaments – first at the Kitsap Fairgrounds on Friday, Dec. 12 and then at Fife High on Saturday – before returning to the island to host their first home meet Tuesday against Ballard.
