To the editor:
Last week, I participated in an Age Wave Candidate Forum in Silverdale and was pleased that my representative, Sherry Appleton, was one of the panelists. The forum focused on issues related to the needs of our state’s aging demographic.
Like the rest of the country, Washington is facing a massive shift that will affect all of us. Since 2011, 10,000 men and women across the nation turn age 65 every day. Did you know that by 2030, almost 25 percent of Kitsap County’s population will be 65 years of age or older? Sherry does!
I am voting to send Rep. Sherry Appleton back to Olympia because she is passionate and determined – and she understands the challenges our state faces. She stands up for the community’s most vulnerable, including our retirees and veterans who are struggling to maintain some stability in their later years. Sherry cares about all ages, and she understands that you can’t “rob Peter to pay Paul.”
For boomers like me, Peter is our child who is struggling to pay for his college education, while Paul is our father who is struggling with failing health and signs of dementia.
No matter how we choose to define family, most of us need extra help from time to time. Sherry understands that caring about family means caring about all generations – from the very young to the very old.
Sherry knows what it takes to get things done in Olympia and understands the practical realities of being an effective legislator. She has devoted years to public service, and I think we need her passion and determination in Olympia now more than ever.
