The Review visited Ordway Elementary to talk turkey — and Thanksgiving — with some of the school’s first-graders.

Elsa Griffin, 7

Do you celebrate Thanksgiving? What do you do?

“We go to our grandma and grandpa’s and have a party.”

What’s the best part of Thanksgiving?

“Thanking people.”

Do you have a turkey or?

“We have turkey and usually, mashed potatoes.”

Have you been talking about the Pilgrims. What did they have at their first Thanksgiving dinner?

“They ate turkey, corn, and mashed potatoes.”

Do you know how to make mashed potatoes?

“You mash up potatoes. And then maybe you could peel off the skin, or leave it on. What we usually do if we have potatoes and we want to mash them, we just mash them ourselves.”

Is there a secret technique?

“We kind of peel it off. We start with a knife, and then we just peel it off with our fingers, and then we mash it.”

Sounds like a lot of work.

“Yeah. My sister needs help, though, because she is 3.”

What are you most thankful for?

“My family.”
