Ferry fares increase for peak season

Get ready to pay a bit more for taking the ferry.

The peak season for Washington State Ferries starts Wednesday, May 1, and an additional 25 percent surcharge will be applied to full fare vehicle/driver tickets.

Peak-season rates are unchanged from 2012, and the surcharge does not affect passenger fares or frequent user multi-ride fares.

On the Bainbridge Island-Seattle route, the one-way fare for a standard-size vehicle (14 feet long to less than 22 feet long) will rise from $13.15 to $16.40.

The peak season runs from May 1 through Sept. 30.

According to WSF, the seasonal surcharge helps pay for increased operational costs that come with increased traffic through September.

WSF noted that a 35 percent surcharge will be added to fares on the Anacortes/San Juan Islands routes during the peak season, and summer parking rates at Anacortes will also go into effect on May 1.
