Port Townsend considers plastic bag ban based on Bainbridge Island’s ordinance

As the old saying goes, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”

It seems that many Washington’s cities are fawning over each other.

According to media reports, the city of Port Townsend is considering a ban on plastic bags and the proposal is based on Bainbridge Island’s own ban passed in April.

The move by Port Townsend comes after residents submitted a petition to the city in favor of banning the bags.

Bainbridge Island’s ban was initially based on the one passed in Seattle in 2011.

As with other Washington cities who have banned the plastic bags, such as Bellingham, Edmonds and Mukilteo, each city has tailored the ban to fit their community.

Currently, the city of Issaquah is also considering banning plastic bags.

As with Bainbridge Island’s, the Issaquah ban would place a 5-cent pass-through charge on paper bags.
