Suicide threat ends without incident

A man threatening suicide while parked near the Bainbridge Island Fire Station on North Madison at around 5 p.m. Tuesday was eventually detained by police without incident and transported for treatment as a mental health patient.

Bainbridge Police Lt. Chris Jensen said the individual, a white male in his late 40s to early 50s, called 911 from his vehicle and said he was “going to do something stupid.”

Police responded and talked to the man for several minutes before he started driving toward State Route 305. Jensen said the man, who had a shotgun in the vehicle, was stopped by officers before reaching the highway and then removed him from the vehicle without a problem.

Police stopped traffic on North Madison and SR-305 during the incident, causing traffic congestion during the rush hour for about a half-hour.
