The final installment of a three-part series.
2009 was a year of new beginnings for the Bainbridge Spartans. In the fall, underclassmen made their mark, as two freshmen led the girls swim team to a seventh-place state finish.
Girls cross country team races to state
For the first time since 1998, the Bainbridge girls qualified for the state meet as a team.
The young team placed 12th with 251 points, led by senior Emily Barreca’s 31st-place finish with a time of 19 minutes, 43 seconds. Sophomore Isabel Ferguson took 54th (20:29) and senior Annie Taylor, the only Spartan with state experience, placed 73rd (20:48).
Even though they graduate two of their top three runners, the Spartans will return five girls from the varsity squad.
Fall highlights:
Girls swim and dive – Freshmen Sarah Grundman and Kay Sterner led the Spartans to a seventh-place finish in the 3A state meet.
Grundman recorded a team-best fourth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle and placed sixth in the 200-yard freestyle.
Girls soccer – The Spartans won three straight matches to earn a spot in the Metro League championship. Even though Bainbridge fell to Holy Names, the team made its first state playoff appearance in five years.
In the first round, the Spartans drew top-ranked Kennedy Catholic, and were defeated 1-0.
