A driver remains in serious condition at Harborview in Seattle after rolling his car off State Route 305 near Koura Road last night.

According to Bainbridge Island Police, the 46-year-old man from Shoreline was traveling south at 90 miles an hour at about 9:15 p.m. Tuesday when he lost control of his red Mercedes convertible. The car spun sideways, hit the northbound embankment and rolled several times, throwing the man clear of the vehicle. Police said the man was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Witnesses said the man was passing cars and ignoring no-passing zones. Kitsap County Sheriff’s deputies saw the Mercedes speeding in Suquamish and tried to stop the car before it sped off across the bridge. Because of the high speed of the car, the deputy broke off the chase. The car was spotted several minutes later near Lovgreen by a Bainbridge police officer, who turned to give chase when the Mercedes crashed.

The injured driver was airlifted to Harborview with serious injuries. Police are still investigating what motivated the crash but said they do not believe alcohol or drugs were involved.

Bainbridge Island Police is asking anyone who witnessed the crash or may have information to call the department.
