Spring comes to the BISCC

Published 9:27 pm Friday, May 2, 2008

“March winds and April showers bring to us the sweet May flowers.”

That’s assuming it doesn’t snow, but nothing is predictable with this year’s strange spring weather.

At the Bainbridge Island Senior Community Center though, one thing is very predictable: May brings our annual meeting, and not even snow will cancel that.

We are privileged this year to have as our guest speaker John Barnett, author of “How to Feel Good as you Age,” a book about goal-setting for a holistic life, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

A dedicated advocate of healthy aging, Barnett remains active and involved in senior issues. A sampling of his activities includes service as a delegate to the White House Conference on Aging, on the King County Area Agency on Aging’s Advisory Council, and on the Puget Sound Regional Council Transportation Board, representing the AARP Livable Communities Initiative. Barnett is the current president of Washington State AARP and a state long-term care ombudsman advocating for residents’ rights in nursing homes, assisted living facilities and adult family homes.

The BISCC Annual meeting will open with a welcome from our board of directors president, Tom Kilbane. He will be assisted by director Jane Allan and program coordinator Eileen Magnuson in delivering the annual report to the membership. This will be followed by the nominating committee’s report and presentation of the slate for new board members. Time will be given for additional nominations from the floor, after which the members present will vote.

The newly elected board members will replace those whose terms are expiring, and will join the board members remaining. In this way, BISCC maintains an energetic mix of experience and new ideas on its board of directors.

Mark your calendar for 10 a.m. Monday, May 12 and plan to be at the BISCC annual meeting so that your voice can be heard and your vote counted. After the business part of the meeting, be motivated by our gifted guest speaker to live your life more fully. Refreshments will be served, so you can nourish your body as well as your mind and spirit.

In addition to Barnett’s talk on positive behavior for living well, the senior center is offering these other programs in May to keep us on our toes mentally, physically, and socially.

Wednesday, May 7 is a chance to broaden your knowledge about a very current aspect of world affairs. Don Marsh, a member of the BISCC Finance Committee, will talk about “Globalization – the many misconceptions.” Marsh is an adjunct professor at the University of Washington teaching on the global economy and the international financial system. He is a senior management advisor with Pacific Northwest Advisors and has had significant experience in international business and finance. (I wonder if he’d be interested in balancing my check book?) The talk on globalization begins at 1 p.m. and is free.

Exercise your lungs at the BISCC Senior Softball game at Rotary Park at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 9. Come hoot and holler and cheer for the home team in the warm – I can dream, can’t I? – spring air.

Also social – and purely social — is Café Magpie, for women only. Sorry guys, but hey, you’ve got the Men’s Breakfast. It will be celebrating its seventh month of “meet and greet” amidst pastries and coffee from 8:45 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 14. Sure it’s early, but the coffee and chatter will wake you up.

Monday, May 19 is this year’s men’s breakfast, at which Stuart Mitchell of New Motion Physical Therapy will talk about “The Secret to Exercise and Aging.” The program will be great, and so will the food and the fellowship. Breakfast begins at 9 a.m.

Be sure to attend the Evergreen Singers’ spring concert, “Broadway Comes to Bainbridge,” featuring songs from the musical theater including “My Fair Lady,” “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Camelot.” Best of all, we get to sing along too and exercise our lungs. This free concert is at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 20. Be there!

At 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 21, the Well Being Committee hosts its Aging Well Coffee Hour. Jeanette Franks, author and University of Washington professor, will speak on how to “Minimize Your Moves and Maximize Your Options.” Questions and discussion will follow the talk.

Make the most of your Senior Center membership and attend these great programs. Even if you’re not a member, you’re always welcome at BISSC, so if you see something here that interests you, come on down. We love meeting new people.
