Sports Roundup – Sailors take down Vikes/Tennis wins three straight

Published 12:00 pm Saturday, March 24, 2007

Cloudy skies, nice southeasterly breezes, and frigid temperatures were the order of the day as 25 sailors from Bainbridge and North Kitsap raced in Vanguard 15 and Flying Junior class sailboats at a regatta in Eagle Harbor Tuesday.

All of the V-15 races and most of the FJ races were fleet style racing, where each boat tries individually to outsail all the other boats in the race.

The last FJ race of the day was a team race, a different type of race wherein each team sails three boats, and tries to outscore the other team’s three boats.

Points are awarded on a low point system, where first place receives one point, second place two, and so on. The team’s score for the race is the total of their points, and ten points or less wins the race.

In the team race, Bainbridge finished first, third, and fourth, for eight points, defeating Dogfish Bay. Bainbridge in this race was represented by Max Fleischfresser and Madeline Jackson, Emma Hartmann and co-captain Amy Allen and co-captain Glen Stellmacher and Andrew Selzler.

The fleet racing in both V-15 and FJ fleets resulted in scores for the two teams that were fairly equal, promising exciting competition between the two for the rest of the season.

In the V-15, Hartmann and Sean Willerford were first, while Jackson and Fleischfresser were second.

Allen and Lukas Woltjer took fourth.

In the FJ, Allen and Evan Stewart took first, while Fleischfresser and Stewart took third.

Bainbridge and ten other district schools will compete in a regatta in Port Townsend March 24-25.

Tennis wins three straight

The Bainbridge tennis team has won their first three matches this season.

The Spartans defeated Eastside Catholic on the road on Wednesday.

All five doubles teams won for Bainbridge.

Darton Gibbons and Erik Saksa dominated in their match with Stefan Perna and Ian Linde, winning 6-0, 6-0.

Molly Donohue and Spencer Cheng, the number one girls and boys singles players, won their matches as well.
