Bainbridge does well at only home league meet on Wednesday.
With the end of the season in sight and the Metro League meet approaching, both Bainbridge teams got some more work in on Wednesday at their only home meet of the season at Battle Point Park.
The boys got top performances from some of their young runners as the Spartans finished in front of Bishop Blanchet and Lakeside.
Bevan Taylor continued his stellar season with a first place finish. He ended with a time of 16:19.
Max Welch was fourth with a time of 17:02, while Taylor Lea was seventh with a time of 17:22.
Ian Shiach was 10th with a time of 17:34, while Matt Tetlow was 14th with a time of 17:47.
Willie Wenzlau rounded out the scoring for Bainbridge with a 19th place finish and a time of 18:15.
The finishes were good enough for Bainbridge to win the meet with a time of 36 points, two better than Blanchet.
Lakeside was third with 48 points.
Taylor said he felt good on the course, but he and the rest of the team were still sore from a grueling training session on Monday.
“We had a really, really hard workout,†he said. “My legs felt really tired and it was windy, but other than that, I felt pretty good. We won as a team, so that felt great.â€
For the girls, Emily Farrar finished first with a time of 19:48, while Callie McKenzie, who was on Farrar’s tail the entire race, was second with a time of 19:50.
Annie Taylor, Bevan’s younger sister, finished in 13th with a time of 20:59, while Molly O’Keefe was 25th with a time of 22:12.
Emelie VanVleet was 27th with a time of 22:17, while Mattie Molskness was 28th with a time of 22:16.
Blanchet finished first thanks to their deep squad, while Bainbridge and Lakeside finished tied with 52 points.
But the Lions took second thanks to their sixth runner finishing higher than the Spartans’ sixth runner.
Farrar said having McKenzie around this year is beneficial to the team as McKenzie was out with an injury last year.
“It’s really helpful,†Farrar said. “Especially since we lost Caroline (Johnson). I was used to chasing her, (but) now I’ve got someone running with me, which is nice.â€
Both teams are benefitting from head coach Dean Tarbill’s workouts, but he credits the kids with taking his and assistant coach Anne Howard Lindquist’s advice and running with it – literally.
“Monday was the hardest workout of the season,†he said. “The kids are leg weary, but we told them, ‘Hey, this will get you ready for Metros.’
“I was so impressed,†Tarbill continued. “Nearly every kid has improved their times from last year. They feel very confident.â€
Bainbridge has one more league meet next Thursday at Lower Woodland, then return there on Oct. 19 for the Metro League championship meet.
Girl golfers on winning streak
If Katie Saucier felt the pressure to keep her streak of medaling in every match intact, it didn’t show Tuesday at Wing Point.
“I was excited, I’m not going to lie,†she said with a laugh.
She and the rest of the team can all share a good chuckle as they defeated Seattle Prep, Lakeside and Holy Names to go 13-0 on the year.
Paired with her main rival in Seattle Prep’s Katrina Hegge, Lakeside’s Flora Weeks and Holy Names’ Madeline Adams, the senior shot a 36 to earn medal honors for the 11th straight match in a row.
Hegge shot a 39, just the second defeat she’s suffered in her prep career.
Their team score of 155 Stableford points ties the highest score of the year by the Spartans.
Saucier’s streak was broken Thursday as she lost to Hegge by one stroke at Jackson Park in Seattle.
Saucier shot an even par 37.
The team still won by defeating Holy Names 148-141.
