After earning gold and silver in Yakima, they foiled league foes.
Bainbridge girls tennis prevailed 5-2 over rivals North Kitsap on Thursday, while the boys took gold and the girls silver at the Pepsi Invitational last weekend in Yakima.
Those solid finishes bookended a pair of Metro League victories over Nathan Hale and Chief Sealth.
Thursday, the Vikings could only manage two wins against the Spartans, coming when former soccer teammates went after each other on the North Kitsap courts.
You had to look twice in the doubles action, as teammates on the 2004 girls U-19 title-winning Phoenix kickers faced off in two matches. The Spartan duo of Anna Judson and Jenny Trygg were taken down, 6-2, 6-2, by Vikings Erin Gallagher and Kearney Bangs. Bainbridge’s Gwen Gottlieb and Jocelyn Moody were felled by Emily Kishii and Meagen Grandall.
Whitney Cheng (12-0) led Bainbridge to victory on the afternoon, ousting Katie Oost, 6-1, 6-2 in the battle of number ones.
Spartan Molly Donohue won 6-2, 6-3, over Britt Seaberg, while teammate Lauren Trageser defeated Kathleen Teefy 6-2, 7-5.
Vikings Brittany and Brandy Meek forced a third set against Kit Fellner and Taylor Raquer, before the Spartan tandem took the number three 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.
In the fours, Jamie Slonaker and Ali Loechl defeated Kathryn Doorey and Joanna Kaiserman 6-3, 6-2.
With a 9-2 win over Nathan Hale Tuesday, followed by a 11-0 dispatch of Chief Sealth the following afternoon, Bainbridge has five league wins in a row and is one match behind second place Lakeside, their last home opponent at 3:30 p.m. April 26.
Visit to Yakima
The boys and girls tennis teams started their busy week placing one-two respectively at the Pepsi Invitational in Yakima.
The boys took the tournament crown beating Eastmont and Davis, falling only to host Eisenhower 5-4.
Daniel Donohue posted a 5-1 record going 3-0 in doubles with fellow senior Ben Miller. Sophomores Taylor Lea (3-0) and Erik Saksa (2-0) helped out, picking up wins in the fifth and sixth singles. Junior Gaelen Kelly and Nash Reijnen also contributed, each posting 2-1 tournament records.
On the strength of Whitney Cheng’s three singles victories, the girls took second at the tournament. Jenny Trygg, who also won two singles events, combined with Cheng for a 2-1 doubles record.
The round robin format allowed each team to play each other, with matches consisting of three doubles and six singles for a total of nine points in competition.
After Mount Spokane today and Lakeside Tuesday, Bainbridge (8-2 overall, 5-2 Metro) travels to Blanchet April 29 and closes the regular season at Seattle Prep May 3.
Fastpitchers slow with bats
The Spartans fastpitch team may have to pull a Pedro Cerrano and make an offering to Jobu if they want to get their bats going.
Bainbridge defeated Lakeside 4-2 in extra innings on Tuesday, but could only muster one hit by Anna Lyons in their 5-0 loss to the Holy Names Cougars on Wednesday, halting their winning streak at five.
Karen Robinson threw another complete game for the Spartans but took the loss, putting her record at 4-3. She walked two and struck out three.
