The girls volleyball team enters this weekend’s Highline invitational with a 3-1 record for the season in non-league play.
The team’s last match against Cleveland was an impressive romp, with BHS taking three straight at 15-0, 15-0, and 15-3. In the first set, Kristina Purdom served all 15 points.
The team’s one loss came against Sequim, an experienced team with six seniors who “have been playing together since they were in middle school,” said BHS coach Julie Miller. “It was good game, though, and we held them to the end.”
Miller looks forward to the more-challenging play of the Highline tournament to condition her team for Monday’s league game against Seattle Prep, the defending state champions, and later, Bishop Blanchet.
The team’s next home match is 6 p.m. Wednesday against Lakeside.

***Kickers end streak of ties
In a game marked by bursts of excellent technical play and moments of sheer chaos, the BHS girl’s soccer broke a three-game streak of ties with a 3-1 win over Holy Names.
The opening minutes looked good for the Cougars, but the Spartans quickly put on their game face and got to work.
Thirteen minutes into the game, freshman Courtney Bell assisted Kyle McFarlane’s goal with a set from the corner to put the Spartans in the lead.
With seven minutes remaining, another cross from the corner, this time launched by Adriana Gonzalez-Medina, fed Allie Picha for a blocked shot that was eventually put away by Bell for a 2-0 lead at the half.
Bainbridge’s consistent defense kept the Cougars at bay with aggressive goaltending by Catherine Powers, who had three saves in the first half.
The Cougars got on the board in the second half on a shot blasted past the tips of goalkeeper Jackie Danzig. Bell rang in shortly thereafter for her second goal of the game, and Danzig made a fine save on another high rocket.
“I’d still like to see some more passing and better control,” said coach Mark Grindrod after the game, “ but when you’re winning, it’s hard to complain too much.”
Tuesday brings Eastside Catholic, Thursday could be the toughest of the year against Bishop Blanchet. Both games are home, and begin at 4 p.m.
