Spartans take second at districts, advance to state swimming championships

The Bainbridge Spartans came out of the SeaKing District 2 Championships with numbers better than a baker’s dozen.

A total of 14 Bainbridge High athletes have qualified for the 3A state championships in boys swimming and diving, and the stellar Spartans will make their way to the state meet in Federal Way Friday boasting four first-place finishes at districts.

The Spartans qualifying for state are diver Kieran Liberman, and swimmers

Parker Bushey, Garrett Waite, Andrew Witty, Kevin Houseman, Jude Wenker, Makai Ingalls, Sam Chapman, Max Enyrich, Tristan Maass, John Velisaris, Aidan Wagner, Carter Hall, Henry Bacon and Adrien Chaussabel.

The first Spartan to win it all at districts was Waite, who claimed the top spot in the 200-yard individual medley with a winning time of 1:55.68.

Ingalls roared to a first-place finish in two events; the 50-yard freestyle (21.63) and the 100-yard butterfly (51.43).

Fellow Spartan Houseman was unbeatable in the 100-yard breaststroke. He took first with a time of 57.81.

The Spartans’ 200-yard medley relay team of Waite, Houseman, Ingalls and Wagner also broke the school record at districts with a time of 1:35.53. The foursome — all sophomores — finished second to Bellevue.

The Wolverines, of course, were the team to beat at districts.

Bellevue lived up to its reputation and won the meet with a total team score of 305. Bainbridge was second with 254, while Mercer Island was third with 180.

Other standout performances at districts include the seventh- and eighth-place finishes of Houseman (1:59.99) and Witty (2:03.98) in the 200-yard IM B Final; a seventh place by Wenker in the 50 free B Final (21.91); and Liberman’s third place in diving.

Wenker also placed second in the 100 free (48.04), while Waite (4.53.06) and Chapman (5:02.10)were fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 500-yard free.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Wagner, Wenker, Ingalls and Parker also claimed second place at districts in 1:27.30.

In the 100-yard backstroke, Witty placed ninth with a time of 56.44.

Wagner and Hall placed fourth (1:00.96) and fifth (1:02.62), respectively, in the 100-yard breaststroke.

And in the meet’s final relay, Chaussabel, Waite, Wenker and Bushey placed second in the 400-yard free (3:15.78).
