Panthers scratch out tennis wins against BHS Spartans

BAINBRIDGE – The Seattle Prep Panthers pounded out wins in both boys and girls tennis and swept both boys and girls matches, 3-2 and 4-1, respectively, against Bainbridge last Friday.

The Bainbridge team fought hard but was overwhelmed by excellent play from Prep.

On the boys side for Bainbridge, Eli Wagner was edged by Aaron Yuan 2-6, 4-6. Jeremy Lipschutz knocked off Elliot Evans (7-6, 7-4, 6-4) to notch his first victory of the year in singles.

Aidan Sullivan and Maxwell Brown went down 1-6, 1-6 to the defending state doubles third place team of Matt Zech and Alex Blattner.

Alec Chan and Kawin Nikomborirak came back to defeat the veteran Panther duo of Ryan Brunette and Chris Roberts, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Asher Van Slyke and Luke Hurd started out fast for the Spartans but ended with a fizzle, dropping 10 of their last 11 games to lose 5-7, 1-6 to Sam Peily and Will Tobin.

The BHS girls were led by another strong performance from Ellie Van Slyke, who posted scores of 2-6, 5-7 in a loss to Mary Pat Lee. Catherine Rolfes fell 0-6, 0-6 to McKenzie Frazier.

Maddy Britto and Sophia Scott had the same result of 0-6, 0-6 against Maria Philip and Maya Somers of Seattle Prep in No. 1 doubles. Katie Hughes and Annika Claudio fell 3-6, 0-6 to Hailey Nelsen and Fiona Scanlan in No. 2 doubles.

Mallory Brown and Marianne Milander posted the lone victory on the girls side for the Spartans, defeating Amanda Medved and Andrea Shaw in two athletic sets, 6-3, 6-2.

The matchup put the Bainbridge boys record at 1-1, and the girls at 0-2.
