Island grapplers go 2-0 in home turf match

The Bainbridge High School varsity wrestling team came out ahead in matches against Bishop Blanchet and Lakeside Thursday, Jan. 10, a fine prelude to the annual Island Invitational Tournament the following Saturday.

Against Blanchet, the Spartans claimed a 40-36 win.

Bainbridge and Blanchet both notched four forfeit wins, and a double forfeit negated the 285-pound match.

Spartan Doug Takada (145-pounds) was pinned by BB’s Chris Goodspeed in 5:23, before BHS’ Clayton Marsh (152) pinned Eric Hodneland in 3:55.

Caroline Michaels of BHS was then pinned by BB’s Lorenzo Herrera in 1:04 in the 160-pound match, but Bainbridge closed the match with two wins: Lulian Blythe (182) pinned James Trainer in 1:23, and Tyler Pickett (195) scored an 18-10 major decision win against Emmanuel Sanchez.

Against Lakeside, things were a bit more one-sided and the Spartans came out ahead 45-18.

Bainbridge claimed four forfeit wins, Lakeside two, and there were three double forfeits (170-, 220- and 285-pounds).

Only Greg Larrabee (160) scored a win for Lakeside, pinning Caroline Michaels in just 14 seconds.

Otherwise, it was a Spartan show all the way. Hiram Topham (113) managed a tech fall against Angela Tran, 17-2; Sagel Bush (132) pinned Harper Meyerson in 1:21; Doug Takada (145) earned a 7-2 decision against James Liu; and, in the 152-pound bracket, Clayton Marsh pinned Patrick Jiang in 3:33.
