Boys light against Newport in rare water polo loss

One point made the difference Monday as the Bainbridge High School varsity boys water polo team found themselves on the wrong side of a 10-9 match on the road against Newport.

It was a rare loss for the Spartan squad, which so far this season has been handily besting most competitors, and dropped their overall record to 5-3.

Goals were scored by Jacques Defawe (three), Harrison Villella (two), Oksar Bannister (two), Nate Lapin (one), and Thomas Defawe (one).

The JV Spartan squad fared better, besting Newport’s junior roster by a score of 6-2.

It was the first of three consecutive away matches for the island team, which returns to the Bainbridge Island Aquatic Center for their final home contest at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22 against Mercer Island.
