BHS splits with Roosevelt in tennis

BAINBRIDGE – The Spartans won their first combined match of the season in varsity tennis 6-4 over the Rough Riders of Roosevelt High earlier this week.

The BHS boys’ side ripped the Rough Riders 5-0.

In No. 1 singles, Bainbridge’s Eli Wagner downed Carson Frazier in two quick sets, 6-2, 6-0.

In No. 2 singles, Aidan Sullivan of BHS lost the first three games of his singles debut before finding his footing and toppled Jacob Mann 6-4, 6-1.

In No. 1 doubles, the team of Jeremy Lipschutz and Maxwell Brown dominated Jonathan Kent and Ben Sahlin, 6-1, 6-1.

At No. 2 doubles, Kristian Magrini made his first start of the season paired with veteran Mason Ogden and they notched a victory over Ben Chavez and Zach Joss, 6-0, 6-1.

Roosevelt defaulted the No. 3 doubles match to Kawin Nikomborirak and Alec Chan.

The Spartan girls lost their end of the match 1-4 to the tough Rough Rider squad, but continued to show improved play and pushed a number of their contests to three sets.

At No. 1 singles, Ellie Van Slyke clinched the combined team victory by winning her first match of the season over Charlotte Evans, 6-2, 6-2.

At No. 2 singles, Sophia Scott dropped her first set 2-6 to Roosevelt’s Julia Tanner, and then fought hard but lost the second set in a tie break 6-7 (4-7).

At No. 1 doubles, Marianne Milander and Mallory Browne lost the first set 4-6, adjusted their strategy and won the second set, 6-1, but succumbed to Lila Stocking and Lucy Levine 0-6 in the third.

At No. 2 doubles, Katie Hughes and Morgan Wickline played a close first set against Lana Maybruck and Sage Choi but lost 5-7, picked up their play in the second set and won 6-1, but ran out of steam and dropped their third set, 0-6.

At No. 3 doubles, Madison Barrett and Molly Alpaugh played a scrappy first set with Galen Ogden and Roxanne Alashasto but lost in a tie break 6-7 (4-7) and then dropped the second set 3-6.

The boys team record improved to 3-1 with the win, while the Bainbridge girls fell to 0-4.
