Ballard battles for tennis win against BHS

BAINBRIDGE – Ballard outlasted Bainbridge in varsity tennis late last week.

Spartan Varsity Coach Jennifer Anne Shorr said the home match was extremely close.

“We didn’t win but it could have really gone either way,” Shorr noted.

“The boys won two matches but lost the clincher at No. 1 in a three-set dogfight that finished in a tiebreaker,” she added. “The girls were even closer — lost four matches in three sets; three of those in third-set tiebreakers. The other went 6-2, 7-5.”

The Beaver boys won 3-2, and the Ballard girls also finished on top, 5-0.

In boys singles, Joe Comiskey beat Bainbridge’s Luke Hurd 6-3, 6-4.

Jon Marstall prevailed over Bainbridge’s John Tappan, 6-1, 6-2.

In boys doubles, Clayton Siebert and Tycho Striegel of Ballard won against the Spartan duo of Asher Van Slyke and Liam Welch, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6.

Bjorn Stanley and Alex Perkins of BHS bested Jager Kulir and Cole Lewis 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Oscar Bray and Elliot Weyand also won in boys doubles for Bainbridge, dispatching Sol Zamora and Kole Knudsen 6-3, 6-2.

In girls singles, Lily Fagerland squeezed out a win against Madison Culp, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Culp’s play was remarkable, Coach Shorr said, noting that Culp had been on the Spartans’ C Team last year.

“Worked hard the rest of the year and played at No. 1 on the varsity today. She played a four-year varsity starter and played a three-hour match,” Shorr said, before Fagerland claimed the win.

Sofia Scott fell in girls singles to Allie Fulcher, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (5).

In girls doubles, Ballard’s Elsa Anderson and Maiya Smith edged Catherine Rolfes and Madison Barrett 6-4, 5-7, 7-6.

Nina Adams and Ruby Fera also took away a win for Ballard in girls doubles, beating Jillian Abullarade and Katie Hughes 6-2, 7-5.

Jennifer Osatza and Hannah McNamara topped Bainbridge’s Mollie Alpaugh and Juli Bakke 6-4, 4-6, 10-8.
