The toys, games and interactive displays at the Kids Discovery Museum have borne witness to more than 3,600 days of fun and learning since its grand opening 10 years ago.

The nonprofit children’s museum was founded by volunteers and remains dedicated to serving the Puget Sound region with its very own unique blend of exploratory, interactive and educational offerings. In honor of its tenth birthday, KiDiMu is throwing its biggest anniversary party ever from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 6.

All are welcome to join the festivities and enjoy a free-admission day. The party will feature complimentary family attractions, demonstrations and entertainment outside on the Island Gateway Plaza.

And yes, of course, there will be cake.

“We are excited to invite the community to celebrate with us and recognize a momentous occasion when we all came together to create a home for early learning on Bainbridge Island,” said Susie Burdick, the museum’s executive director.

KiDiMu was founded by concerned volunteers who recognized the area’s critical need for a resource that would help promote school readiness, Burdick explained. They created an awareness of the region’s gap in early learning and brought supporters together to address those needs.

Now, approximately 300,000 visitors and a decade later, KiDiMu remains the only children’s museum on the Kitsap Peninsula.

“As the museum continues to evolve to match visitors’ expectations by offering a variety of exhibits and programs, one thing is a constant: [at] KiDiMu kids are in charge,” Burdick said. “They inspire staff, volunteers and parents to engage with them. Through this process, children acquire skills that will help them succeed academically and grow up to be responsible members and leaders of their communities.”

Special guests and performers at the 10th KiDiMu birthday bash include the acclaimed “kindie” band Recess Monkey, set to take the stage at noon as well as the ever-popular Reptile Man and his animal crew petting zoo at 1 p.m. “ATLaS,” the Bainbridge High School robotics club’s main robot, will kick off the day’s festivities on the plaza with a special demonstration at 10 a.m. Roberto the Magnificent will entertain with his hilarious, high-energy magic tricks at 11 a.m. and then lead the crowd in singing “Happy Birthday” for KiDiMu, a chorus to be followed by a cake cutting ceremony and announcement about a new exhibit coming soon to the museum.

In addition to scheduled performances, families will also enjoy many other attractions throughout the day. Catie’s Photography will capture party smiles from 10 a.m. to noon. Also, while supplies last, visitors will be able to have fun with a birthday candle craft and sign up for a special free cupcake costume workshop to prepare to join KiDiMu in the July 4 parade. Between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., the guests can try science experiments with a multiple Emmy Award-winning writer, educator and geek mama Lynn Brunelle and also get their faces painted while enjoying free milk, courtesy of Smith Brothers Farms.

Daring kids will also get to climb aboard a fire truck or inside a police car (present on site unless the BIFD and BIPD crews are called to action, of course) and have hands-on fun with Bainbridge Public Library as well. Local food vendors will be on site to offer visitors additional refreshments.

KiDiMu will also offer complimentary tattoos, balloons and party hats to help visitors get in the party mood and inspire them to share their museum memories from the last decade.
