BCF releases State of the Sector annual report

Bainbridge Community Foundation has released its 2023 State of the Sector Community Report.

The annual report is an analysis of community needs and opportunities using public data. BCF supports local nonprofits that can help in these areas.

“Our goal is to encourage our community to work together, all bringing our own life experiences and diverse perspectives to the table, to help meet each other’s needs,” the report says.

General information shows Bainbridge Island has a population of 24,825 with 85% being white and 52% female. 74% are college graduates and 26.4% are over 65.

Regarding issues of importance, health services rank No. 1 at 77%, followed by affordable housing, and respect and social inclusion, tied at 69%. Transportation followed with education and learning also rated high at 64%.

Other interesting statistics

-The average home price has gone from $500,000 10 years ago to $1.15 million in 2023.

—52% say it takes too long to get a medical appointment. 31% say they could not receive mental health counseling when needed. Primany care offices get an average of 20 new patient calls per day, up from two before COVID.

—Bainbridge High School ranks 9th out of 347 in the state. 95% graduate, 74% are in Advanced Placement, 21% are minorities and 8% are economically disadvantaged. BISD enrollment has dropped from almost 3,800 in 2017-18 to about 3,450 last year.

—In economics, BISD has 712 employees, with Washington State Ferries in second place with 168. As for difficulties obtaining child care, 50% said hours are not flexible enough, 39% say wait lists are too long and 25% say cost is too high.

—As for transportation, the report shows results for those age 65 and older. 87% drive themselves, 56% take a ferry, 39% walk or bike, 47% are satisfied with public transportation and 49% are dissatisfied with taxi or rideshare services like Uber.
