Bainbridge library receives landmark gift

The late Marjorie Moore made local library history when her bequest was announced in August by Loyal, Moore’s husband of 65 years.

The great gift: a donation just over $1 million.

Marj, as she was known by family and friends, passed away last year and her contribution will go into the Bainbridge Public Library’s Legacy Fund for long-term support of the library in the form of future construction, maintenance and building operations.

“Her support of the library fulfills her appreciation of the Bainbridge community and enhanced her sense of belonging,” Loyal Moore said.

“Her love of the library grew naturally out of her love of all the arts,” he added. “She was always checking out books, and took our daughters and then our grandkids to the library.”

After moving to the island in 1995, the Moores immediately made a major contribution to the library’s construction efforts. Eric Peterson, board president of the Bainbridge Public Library, said that the pair continued to remain ardent supporters of the library.

“This extraordinary gift honors not only what the library meant to her, but also her desire that it continue to serve the Bainbridge community for years,” Peterson said.
