Bainbridge blotter | ‘Not much’ to drink, but enough for jail

Selected reports from the Bainbridge Island Police Department blotter.

FRIDAY, APRIL 5

11:46 p.m. A 37-year-old Bainbridge Island man was arrested for driving under the influence.

While monitoring traffic at Wyatt Way and Madison Avenue North, police saw a pickup truck driving too fast, going west, which also did not stop at the sign at the intersection.

Police followed, and saw the truck speed up considerably. Near Eagle Harbor Drive the truck was forced to slow as there was another vehicle in front of it. The officer turned on his car’s lights and then the driver attempted to pull off the road, but when police activated a spotlight he got back onto the road and drove to the nearby American Legion parking lot.

The driver provided upon request his registration and proof of insurance but had to be asked twice for his license. He smelled strongly of alcoholic beverages, slurred his speech and had glassy eyes. Asked how much he’d had to drink that night, the man said, “Not much.”

After agreeing to perform a field sobriety test, at which he did poorly, the driver refused a Breathalyzer. He was arrested and transported to the county jail.
