Bainbridge blotter | Bomb squad at Manitou Beach

Selected reports from the Bainbridge Island Police Department blotter.

TUESDAY, FEB. 26

1:24 p.m. A report of a suspicious device at Manitou Beach resulted in the beach being closed and the Washington State Patrol bomb squad being summoned.

The device, a clear plastic cylinder spotted by a dog walker attached to a cement wall next to the street, had wires, a red light and was connected to a solar panel. Inside the cylinder was numerous wires, a battery, an unopened beer bottle and a small flashing light.

Island police photographed the device and forwarded the pictures to Bangor EOD. Further examination revealed what appeared to be a possible blasting cap attached to the wires.

The beach was closed between Murden Cove and Beachcrest Drive, and the bomb squad was called to the scene.

While securing the scene, police were told by several people that the device had been seen in the area on the beach and near the wall many times in the past few weeks.

While the bomb squad was investigating, a Poulsbo man called to say the device belonged to him. He’d seen news items about the suspicious device, which included a description, and thought it was his property. He told police it was a “buoy measurement device.”

After speaking with the man, the bomb squad took possession of the device and made arrangements to return it to him later.

The item was determined not to be an explosive.
