The Battle Point Astronomical Association presents the planetarium show “Discovering Asteroids” at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12.

Astronomers are discovering hundreds of asteroids every day. A catastrophic collision with an asteroid killed the dinosaurs. It’s only a matter of time until the next big asteroid finds the earth. With preventive measures, discovering asteroids can save civilization.

Association President Stephen Ruhl will explain how asteroids interact with Jupiter and the other planets, the discovery of new asteroids, and why we need look out for Near Earth Asteroids.

If the sky is clear, astronomers will be on hand with telescopes.

The program is free to members; $2 donation suggested for nonmembers, $5 for families.

The Battle Point Astronomical Association is a nonprofit amateur astronomy organization that operates the Edwin E. Ritchie Observatory and John H. Rudolph Planetarium in the Helix House at Battle Point Park.
