Bainbridge becomes the home of a scaled solar system model

Geocaching, science, and family will collide Monday, May 1 when a new scaled model of the solar system will be installed around the island.

Designed to bring families and friends together over science and sleuthing, the scaled solar system will span four miles, from downtown Winslow all the way up to Battle Point Park, and creators of this universe note Pluto was NOT cut from the roster.

Participants can geocache their way through the solar system, which is scaled to a 5-foot sun, while exploring Bainbridge’s beautiful parks.

Each planet has a specialized stamp that can be collected in a small passport book that contains interesting information for each planet. Some planets even have a finder’s reward for kids, making the adventure even more fun. For example, when searchers find Uranus, they can turn their stamp into Island Cool for a free kiddie cup.

When participants have completed their journey through our solar system, they can bring a completed passport book to an astronomy show at Bainbridge’s observatory to redeem a finisher’s patch.

The project was funded by BPAstroKIDS, and developed by Erica Saint Clair, owner of Rosie Research and the lead project creator at BPAstroKIDS.
