The crew of the ferry MV Wenatchee is being credited with the rescue of a man who went overboard from his 39-foot vessel near Elliot Bay Marina.

The incident occurred just before 11 a.m. Monday, June 23.

Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class David Mosley said the boater went over the side of his vessel but was able to hang on long enough to call for help.

“He fell overboard and was clinging to the side of his vessel as it continued to motor along to Elliot Bay Marina,” Mosley said.

The man was wearing a life jacket equipped with a radio and quickly called for help. Mosley said the crew of the Wenatchee heard the call and sent a small rescue raft to assist.

The man’s boat crashed into the breakwall at the marina and sank, and the ferry crew plucked the man from the water, Mosley said.

“We really want to give them a lot of credit for stepping up and ensuring the safety of the mariner,” Mosley said of the Wenatchee crew.

The man was taken to the Seattle Fire Department’s station on the Seattle waterfront and transferred to a waiting EMS unit.

The 10:40 a.m. sailing from Bainbridge Island was delayed by 30 minutes as the Wenatchee assisted in the rescue.

Washington State Ferries said the rescue operation also prompted a late sailing for the Wenatchee’s 11:30 a.m. departure from Bainbridge, and was expected to delay the 1:10 p.m. ferry sailing as well.

The 12:20 p.m. and 2:05 p.m. sailings from Seattle are also expected to be delayed.
