A Bainbridge cyclist, who was airlifted Tuesday to Harborview Medical Center following hit-and-run collision on state Route 305, was at home recovering from minor injuries Wednesday morning.

Bainbridge Police Deputy Police Chief Mark Duncan said cyclist Mark Seawell, 60, had sustained a concussion, scrapes and bruises in the accident that closed 305 for hours Tuesday.

Meanwhile, police have arrested the 24-year-old Poulsbo woman suspected of hitting Seawell and fleeing the scene.

Georgia Leigh Zimmerman was arrested in Poulsbo following the accident and booked into Kitsap County Jail Tuesday on charges of vehicular assault and felony hit and run, according to Bainbridge Police.

Police say Zimmerman was driving a full-size Dodge Ram truck northbound on 305 at 2 p.m. when she struck and drove over Seawell, who was pedaling north.

Zimmerman stopped and checked the cyclist, then drove away before emergency responders reached the scene, police said.

Police arrested Zimmerman at the intersection of Totten Road and 305. According to the police, there was an odor of alcohol on Zimmerman’s breath and “evidence of drinking inside the vehicle.”

Zimmerman’s bail was set at $100,000 and she was scheduled to make her first court appearance Wednesday afternoon.

Bainbridge Police closed 305 from Day Road to Hidden Cove Road following the accident, and commuter traffic was backed up for miles on a detour around Phelps Road. The highway was reopened at about 5:30 p.m.

At the scene, police inspected a black bicycle, still splayed in the northbound lane amidst debris and pieces Seawell’s bicycle helmet.

“The bicycle helmet clearly saved his life,” Duncan said. “The bicycle helmet was in a multitude of pieces but his head remained intact.”
