Three Northwest painters featured at next Roby King show

Roby King Gallery presents the art of three Northwest painters — Pamela Wachtler, Jane Wallis and Chris Witkowski — at the gallery in March.

The show opens Friday, March 3 and runs through Saturday, April 1.

The First Friday reception is 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 3.

Wachtler’s understandings of the silvery gray skies and waters of the Northwest are that which gives her paintings a warm and enveloping feeling. The impressionistic qualities of this detailed and delicate artwork reflect the tradition of “The Philadelphia Ten,” a group of painters educated in the early 1900’s at Moore College in Pennsylvania.

For Wallis, her art is inspired by the majesty of music.

“Painting plein-air is an important phase in my painting. I like to imagine that I am confronting this visual world like it was a symphony arranged by the light. The eye, like an intuitive ear, is tuned to this world,” Wallis notes.

“You listen with an all absorbing emotion, allowing harmony and rhythm to permeate the senses. Using instruments of watercolor, pastel or oil, I play out the musical score with color, contrast and gesture.”

Witkowski is an artist equally skilled in pastel, oil and watercolor. Being a career illustrator with the ability to handle these different mediums permits a creative freedom to work within varied subject matter. “Color, draftsmanship, composition and the play of light are what anchor the craft of my painting,” he explains.

Roby King Gallery is located at 176 Winslow Way East.
