Peter A. Bunce died at his home in Hong Kong on Oct. 13, 2015.
He was born in Sedalia, Missouri on July 13, 1961 and grew up on Bain-bridge Island, where he attended Blakely Elemen-tary School, Commodore Bainbridge Middle School and Bainbridge High School.
After his sophomore year in high school, Peter enrolled at Shoreline Community College, where he studied German, natural sciences and mathematics, earning an associates of arts and sciences degree in 1980. He graduated from the University of Washington in 1983 with a bachelor of arts degree in Germanic languages.
Peter taught English in Japan for seven years before moving to Van Nuys, California in 1990. While living in Japan, he met Ukiko Yomogida whom he married in 1990. They divorced in 2010.
While living in Van Nuys, Peter joined several Toastmasters clubs in California. His Toastmaster honors included Outstanding Area Governor of the Year (1995-1996), two Distinguished Toastmaster awards (June 1998 and February 2006), Outstanding Division Governor of the Year (2005-2006). He also served as public relations officer (2004-2005).
Peter worked as a legal assistant, preparing bankruptcy petitions, from 2002 until 2013, when he moved to Shenzhen, China to teach English. In 2013 Peter moved to Kowloon, Hong Kong, where he taught German and English. He was also active in the Kowloon Toastmasters Club.
Peter is survived by his mother, Jane Callahan of Bainbridge Island; brothers, Jay and Jeff; sisters, Dorothy and Joy; and a cousin, Karen. He was predeceased by his father, Wesley Bunce and his step-father Bob Callahan.
Peter’s ashes were scattered in the Garden of Remembrance at Cape Collinson, Hong Kong, by members of the Kowloon Toastmasters Club. Wherever he lived, Peter affected others with a genuine and unselfish desire to teach skills to improve lives. He died as he lived, in the service of others. Peter will be missed by his family and by his many friends throughout the world.
