The 1959 romantic comedy classic “Some Like it Hot” will return to the big screen for a special one-night-only showing at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 14 at Bainbridge Cinemas.
Produced and directed by the legendary Billy Wilder (“Sunset Boulevard” and “The Seven Year Itch,” among others) and starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon, the film tells the story of two two musicians who dress in drag in order to escape from mafia gangsters whom they witnessed commit a Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre-esque murder.
The movie remains significant today for a number of reasons, including the involvment of Wilder and being one of the staple performances of Monroe’s brief career, as well as being voted as the top comedy film by the American Film Institute on their list “100 Years… 100 Laughs” in 2000.
The film is also notable for featuring such prominent cross dressing, and for playing with the idea of homosexuality, which led to it being produced without approval from the Motion Picture Production Code, according to NPR.
“The film’s plot was a veritable catalog of once-forbidden topics — gambling and racketeering to get the plot going, a booze-swilling Marilyn Monroe to keep it going,” wrote Bob Mondello. “A year after ‘Some Like It Hot’ was released, the head of the [Motion Picture Association of America] began suggesting that some sort of classification system might work better than a censorship system that no one was paying attention to. In 1968, his organization finally shifted from restricting filmmakers to alerting audiences, using the film-ratings system we know today.”
Tickets, on sale now, are $11 each. Visit www.farawayentertainment.com for more information.
