SWERV welcomes guest speaker on programmable DNA editing
Published 10:30 am Sunday, June 11, 2017
All women are invited to attend Savvy Women Exchanging Relevant Views to hear Garret Ihler, retired Texas A&M head of medical biochemistry and medical genetics, explain one of the newest and most exciting discoveries in biological science.
It’s called Crispr-Cas9, and it comes from the immune system of bacteria.
Using it allows manipulation of nearly all living cells from plants to insects, and most controversially, potentially, us.
Ihler will delve into the basic science, and also discuss the implications from a patent dispute to possible breakthroughs in medical treatments — and associated ethical concerns.
SWERV meets from 10:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday, June 13 at Filipino American Hall, 7566 High School Road.
