Neighborhoods Island should follow Portland’s lead | Letters | March 19

Portland, Ore., is a livable community and has much in common with our island even though it is a large, urban city. One of its best qualities is its feeling of neighborhood.
My favorite one in the Sellwood area had a huge flower painted on the roadway and each corner had an offering for passersby. One corner was planted with apple trees and blueberries with a hand lettered sign saying “please pick the fruit.” Another corner held a book exchange in a hand-built, wooden kiosk and another one had a coffee and tea pot.
At 7 p.m., Friday, Islandwood is hosting a presentation by the Portland group City Repair. They will be talking about these kinds of neighborhood installations. It will be a great program and something to adopt on our island.
